The BiG Friday Edit | 6

Happy Friday!
Aside from dinner plans with friends tonight and brunch on Sunday with another friend I haven’t seen in months my weekend is looking to be lovely and quiet. All the better to catch up on sleep!
But first…
The Health Edit: If you don’t like exercising I have the perfect workout to convert you – a Barrecore cardio class at the London Mayfair location with Kiri. She has such an incredible energy and I literally laughed out loud in class this week (while sprinting, no less!) because with the music blaring and Kiri screaming that we were all unstoppable queens I realised I’ve literally never had more fun working out. I’ve convinced G to give the class a go with me in a few weeks time and I can’t wait to see what he makes of it – it’s a long way from the Crossfit and gym workouts he’s used to!
The Shopping Edit: Spring is on it’s way (it is! I decree it!) so it’s time to toss my weathered, staple winter shoes for glorious new white sneakers. Yes, your eyes do not deceive you! These are the exact same ones I already have. Why mess with perfection? I also picked up some cosy new PJ’s to get me through the (still dark) cold nights. These (in ‘Bauble Bauble’ and ‘Dot on Dot’) from Boden are the perfect winter to spring level of cosy.
The Book Edit: This week I read Burning Glass by Kathryn Purdie. It had all the ingredients for success – it’s YA, dystopian, there’s a love triangle and an inspiring (in the beginning), empathetic heroine. BUT, it also had acres of page space devoted to circular emotions and conversations which meant it wasn’t until the last fifth of the story that the heroine found her strength and became someone you could really admire. I’m all for a deep, emotional journey but when it takes this long the reader loses empathy for what the character is going through because we’re too busy (internally) yelling at her to get herself together and stop acting like a doormat in no control of her own future. Burning Glass is the first in a trilogy and unlike last week’s read, it had the opposite problem – it wrapped things up so completely that it’s difficult to see why any further books are needed. I think I’ll leave it at the one.
I’ve now started Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo (previously mentioned here) and the first two chapters already have me completely gripped. In fact, I might just take a moment to read a few more pages…

The Life Edit: The state of the world is literally keeping me up at night but it’s also making doing a regular digital detox much easier. I’m getting into a habit of not checking emails/Twitter/Facebook (and barely checking Instagram) on weekends and let me tell you – taking a break from the raging inferno of world affairs two days a week is very freeing. Give it a try!

Don’t get me wrong – I love the excitement and anticipation of jetting off on a trip (long or short) but there’s definitely an argument to be made for staying close to home every once in a while.
